At Health Spa Healdsburg, hot stone massage combines the benefits of thermotherapy (heat therapy) with massage techniques. This is a deeply relaxing and healing treatment. The hot stones penetrate tissues deeply, softening the muscles and releasing tension.
Basalt stones, of various sizes, shapes and weights are chosen. These black volcanic rocks absorb and retain heat well. They are heated to 200 degrees, then cooled slightly. The therapist carefully manages the stones’ heat as they deeply massage the body.
The first recorded use of heated stones to relieve tired muscles dates back to before the Shang Dynasty in China (ca. 4000 BC). This ancient technique has been used throughout time by many cultures for many different healing practices.
Some of the stones may be placed on strategic places, such as the spine, thighs and behind the knees to improve the flow of energy throughout the body. The heat from the stones relaxes muscles and increases the blood flow in each area. The healing process is further accelerated as this circulation increase aids mental relaxation.
As the warm stones relax the body, the mind is calmed, retreating into a deep meditative state. Mental relaxation is vital to helping the therapist work into deeper muscles of the body. It is a wonderfully refreshing experience. The result is a feeling of overall good health.
Your body becomes re-energized. The soothing heat therapy promotes a positive energy flow giving a sense of harmony, peace and balance. The effects of a hot stone massage may last for as long as 24 hours.
We have found that 60 minutes is too short of a time to fully experience the healing benefits of this massage. Our hot stone massage is a thoroughly relaxing 90-minute treatment.
